We are hosting a 6-day professional Q Grader course from 16th October to 21st October 2018 in our very own SCAA Certified Lab.
The course covers comprehensive lessons and tutorials by Damon Chen, the first Chinese SCA certified Q-Grader instructor in history, followed by examinations which verify your capability to be a Q-Grader.

What is Q Grader?
Q Grader is a person certified by the Coffee Quality Institute (CQI) who is capable of evaluating arabica coffee smell and taste.
What is CQI?
Coffee Quality Institute (CQI) is a non-profit organization working internationally to improve the quality of coffee and the lives of the people who produce it.
Who and why should you participate?
No matter what is your day-to-day job in the coffee industry, producer, importer roaster or barista, Q Grader course is the ultimate rigorous learning experience to enrich the coffee journey.
- Producer/ Importer: – To have a better understanding of the producer’s crop quality to determine the reasonable price. Effective communication with buyers with a common language.
- Coffee Roaster: – To reinforce the insight of coffee beans to execute optimal roasting profile.
- Trainer:
1. To enhance the coffee knowledge from seed to cup.
2. To update the professionalism to converse the universal language with coffee people.
- Barista: – To boost one’s knowledge and confidence to gain customers’ satisfaction.
- Coffee Lover: – Exposure to different coffees beans to enhance one’s experience.
What Should You Expect?

Participants must pass the following Q Grader Exams to receive certification:
- General Coffee Knowledge (1 Test)
- Sensory Skills Test (3 Tests)
- Cupping Skills Test (4 Tests)
- Olfactory Skills Test (4 Tests in 2 parts)
- Triangulation Skills Test (4 Tests)
- Organic Acid Matching Pairs (1 Test)
- Arabica Green Coffee Grading (1 Test)
- Arabica Roasted Coffee Grading (1 Test)
- Roasted Sample Identification (1 Test)

By successfully completing all of these Q Grader exams, a participant will be eligible to become a certified Q Grader. If failing to pass any exam in the first course, the subject may retake the exam within 18 months in any approved classes.
Q Grader Certificates are valid for 36 months from the first-course attempt. After, certificate holders must pass a Calibration Course once every 36 months to maintain active status.

Damon Cheng, the first Chinese Q Grader since 2007 and first Chinese Q Grader instructor since 2012 of Coffee Quality Institute (CQI). Damon has extensive experiences in judging international competitions and championships.
